Day of the Year
Mine Rescue Day
- In 2013, Mine Rescue Day was established by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The purpose of the day is to recognize and show appreciation for the sacrifice and dedication that is regularly made by the volunteers who put their own lives at risk in order to save the lives of others who work in the mines.
- The date of October 30 was chosen in honor of the first mine rescue demonstration that took place in 1911 in Pittsburgh under the direction of the first director of the US Bureau of Mines. Even US President William Howard Taft attended this event.

Modi govt. not allotting funds for Wayanad rehabilitation: Priyanka
- ongress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday intensified her campaign for the byelection from the Wayanad constituency to the Lok Sabha by accusing the BJP-led Union government of neglecting the rehabilitation of the landslides-hit areas of Wayanad by not providing any funds.
- Speaking at a corner meeting at Eengapuzha in the Thiruvambady Assembly constituency in Kozhikode, Ms. Vadra said the stand taken by the Modi government indicated its lack of respect for the people and the nation, and the same was evident from its policies made during the last 10 years of its governance. The policies of the Modi government always favoured five to six business friends of the Prime Minister and did not benefit the people.
Indian Americans still back Harris, but are seeing Trump’s appeal
The U.S. is set to vote in the 47th presidential election on November 5. Even as a majority of Indian Americans continue to lean towards the Democratic Party, support for the Republican Party is gaining momentum in the community. Indian Americans, the second-largest immigrant group in the U.S., are wealthier than the average American and their incomes too are growing at a faster rate. Concentrated mostly in States such as California, they primarily work in the private services industry. Indian Americans tend to be younger than other groups.
Why India is at risk of becoming a ‘diminishing democracy’
It is rare that the opening sentences of a book grip you, leaving you nodding in silent agreement. Yet this is what happened when I picked up veteran academic and writer Zoya Hasan’s new book, Democracy on Trial: Majoritarianism and Dissent in India, published by Aakar Books. Its opening sentences read, “India is a thriving democracy when it comes to elections but a diminishing democracy when it comes to equality and freedoms. The very idea of a democracy based on equal rights irrespective of caste, class or faith has changed under the pressure of majoritarian politics which gained ground after the assumption of power by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in 2014.”
General Electric may deliver engines for LCA by March or April; India invokes penalty clause
- After several delays, the F-404 jet engines, meant to power the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk1A, are expected to be delivered by the U.S. engine manufacturer General Electric (GE) by March or April 2025, according to sources in the know. The contractual obligations in terms of penalty for delayed deliveries have been invoked, sources have said.
- The deal is between the GE and the defence public sector undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL). However, sources said there were no politics involved, and termed the delay in deliveries a “pure logistical issue”.
- In February 2021, the Defence Ministry had signed a ₹48,000-crore deal with the HAL for 83 LCA-Mk1A, a more capable fighter than the current LCA-Mk1 in service.
