India, Spain slam attacks on UN troops in Lebanon
- India and Spain on Monday condemned the attacks on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and highlighted that the safety and security of peacekeepers are of “paramount importance and must be ensured by all.” The two countries are major troop-contributing nations to the UNIFIL.
- The inviolability of UN premises and the sanctity of their mandate must be respected, a joint statement, issued after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sanchez, said.
- The UNIFIL has come under a series of attacks since the Israeli offensive in Lebanon, and on several occasions, peacekeepers and positions were targeted by the Israel Defence Forces. India has 903 troops under the UNIFIL, while Spain has 676 soldiers as on October 20.

As INDIA bloc falls apart in Rajasthan, bypolls throw up a challenge before parties
- The upcoming byelections to seven Assembly seats in Rajasthan have thrown up a challenge before major parties in the State. With the INDIA bloc falling apart in the State barely five months after the 2024 Lok Sabha poll, its constituent parties have decided to go it alone this time. The ruling BJP, 10 months into office, will face public scrutiny in the November 13 bypoll to Ramgarh, Salumber, Dausa, Jhunjhunu, Deoli-Uniara, Khinwsar, and Chorasi constituencies.
- The Congress, Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP), and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had together won 11 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the State as INDIA bloc constituents. With no efforts being made on the seat-sharing front, the BAP and RLP have fielded candidates in their strongholds, making it a triangular contest in three constituencies.
BJP spokesperson Shaina named in Shiv Sena’s third list
Shaina N.C., a spokesperson for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figured in Shiv Sena’s third list of 15 candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly election, released by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday night. The list also features the name of Sanjana Jadhav, daughter of former Union Minister and BJP leader Raosaheb Danve. Ms. Shaina will contest from the Mumbadevi seat against sitting Congress MLA Amin Patel, while Ms. Jadhav will contest from the Kannad seat.PTI
Prestige battle for two Senas in Worli
- Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena on Sunday formally announced the candidature of Rajya Sabha member Milind Deora from the Worli Assembly constituency in Mumbai, setting the stage for the biggest battle of the election in Maximum City.
- The stakes are high not only for Mr. Deora and his opponent, sitting MLA Aaditya Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT), but also for Mr. Shinde and Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. Not to be left behind, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by Mr. Uddhav Thackeray’s cousin Raj Thackeray too has entered the race, naming veteran Sandeep Deshpande in a seat that is not his home ground.
Centre warns against illegal digital payment gateways
- The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the Union Home Ministry, has issued an alert against illegal payment gateway created using mule bank accounts by transnational organised cyber criminals facilitating money laundering as a service.
- The Ministry on Monday said that recent nationwide raids by the Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh Police had revealed that trans-national criminals had created illegal digital payment gateways using mule or rented bank accounts.
- This illegal infrastructure facilitating money laundering as a service were used for laundering proceeds of multiple nature of cybercrimes.
- As reported by The Hindu on October 24,mule bank accounts were one of the significant contributors to the online financial scams that could potentially siphon off 0.7% of the country’s GDP.
