No decision yet, clarifies Himachal Pradesh govt. after Minister’s ‘vendors must display ID’ remark

  • A day after Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh said it has been made mandatory for street vendors in the State to display their identity cards, the Congress government on Thursday clarified that no such decision has been taken so far.
  • “Numerous suggestions have been received from different sections of society regarding the street vendors’ policy. So far, the government has not taken any decision to mandatorily display nameplates or other identification by vendors on their stalls,” a government spokesperson said in a statement released from Shimla.

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed poll rallies in Jammu on Thursday and warned of stern action against separatists and Pakistan if they disturb the peace in Kashmir.
  • “Those who would promote terrorism will meet the same fate as that of (Parliament attack convict) Afzal Guru,” Mr. Shah said.
  • On regional parties’ demand to restore Article 370, Mr. Shah said, “Even generations after Rahul (Gandhi) would not be able to restore it.

  • Despite a master’s degree in public administration, life has been tough for Ramit Kumar, 42, a resident of Kurukshetra in Haryana. A government job has been his lifelong dream, but it remains ever distant owing to the high competition. Reports of scams have been a deterrent too. He now works in a private bank and earns ₹8,000 a month, not enough to manage a family of three.
  • Mr. Kumar is among many struggling to find suitable jobs in the election-bound State, where unemployment and migration are big poll issues.

One night at the police station

In the early evening of September 19, videos on social media platform X went viral. A 32-year-old woman in a wheelchair, wearing a cervical collar, her face traumatised, with mics of TV channels thrust at her, spoke of horrors she had allegedly faced at the Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar, Odisha’s capital. As she was wheeled out of AIIMS Bhubaneswar following an Orissa High Court order for a medical examination, she recounted a night of sexual harassment and physical torture at the hands of women and men police personnel.

U.S. files $100-mn claim over Baltimore bridge collapse

  • The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a response in a Maryland court demanding more than $100 million in damages from Grace Ocean Pvt Ltd. and Synergy Marine Pvt Ltd., the owner and the manager of containership Dali that crashed into a bridge off Baltimore on March 26. This led to six deaths and injuries to two persons, besides requiring a salvage operation and shutdown of the Baltimore port for many months.
  • The response filed was to a limited liability claim made by the owner and the manager soon after the accident.
