Day of the Year

National Women’s Equality Day

  • National Women’s Equality Day has been celebrated for many years. It was direst celebrated in 1973. Since then, the United States President has proclaimed the date. The date has been selected to commemorate the day in the 1920s when Bainbridge Colby, who was the Secretary of State at the time, signed the proclamation that gave women in the United States the constitutional right to vote.
  • In 1920, the day stood for the result of 72 years of campaigning by a huge civil rights movement for women.

Attacking Hezbollah, Israel fighter jets bomb Lebanon

  • Israel launched a wave of air strikes across southern Lebanon early on Sunday in what it said was a pre-emptive strike to avert a large Hezbollah attack. The militant group responded that it had launched hundreds of rockets and drones to avenge the killing of one of its top commanders last month.
  • The heavy exchange of fire does not appear to have ignited a long-feared war, but the situation remains tense. Egypt was meanwhile hosting high-level talks aimed at brokering a ceasefire in the 10-month-old Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, which diplomats hope will tamp down regional tensions.

  • The ruling AAP is now left with 129 members in the MCD House, just three seats more than the halfway mark of 126. The BJP’s number has now risen to 110 while nine councillors belong to the Congress.
  • The anti-defection law, which punishes individual MPs and MLAs for leaving one party for another, is not in force in the civic body.

Indians who migrate abroad double their incomes

  • Indians who migrate abroad often experience more than a 100% increase in their income levels whereas Indians who continue to work in their homeland often have to wait for over 20 years to get such a hike. This explains why most Indians who go abroad do not return home even if they benefit from a wage premium on doing so. These conclusions are based on a recent World Bank report titled ‘Migrants, Refugees and Societies’.
  • Indians who migrate abroad experience an average 118% increase in their income levels (Chart 1). International migrants from Bangladesh and Ghana experience a 210% and 153% increase in income, respectively. The report states that one key driver for economic migration is the wage gap between the origin and destination country.

Gang rape of girl sets off war of words in Assam

  • The alleged gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in central Assam’s Dhing on August 22 has triggered a war of words between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress.
  • Taking to X, the State BJP accused the Congress of jumping to the defence of the rape accused, Taijul alias Tafazzul Ali, who the police claimed had drowned after jumping into a pond in a bid to escape from custody. The accused was in handcuffs.
  • “So, is it true that @INCAssam is rolling out the red carpet, mobilizing every corner of its vast ecosystem and loyal supporters, to defend their ‘star’ of the Dhing incident who finally faced the music today (August 24)? Must be because he hails from a particular community, right?” the BJP’s post read.
