- It is believed to have been created by a man named Samuel Parkinson in Yorkshire, Doncaster. Although nobody knows the exact origins, records show that a recipe for the candy that inspired this dessert was published in a newspaper in 1848.

J&K phase I poll peaceful, records a 61.13% turnout
Voters turned out in good numbers in the 24 Jammu and Kashmir constituencies that went to the polls in the first phase of the Assembly election on Wednesday, registering a polling percentage of 61.13%.
There was a clear increase in turnout in all 16 seats in the militancy-affected areas of the Kashmir Valley, in comparison with the last Assembly election held a decade ago, with many voters and candidates expressing hope that the democratic exercise will bring change to the region.
Kishtwar recorded the highest turnout of 80.14% and Pulwama the lowest at 46.65%, as per provisional data at 11.50 p.m.

40 people stranded on Adi Kailash Yatra route rescued
Forty people stranded on the Adi Kailash Yatra route due to landslides in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh were rescued with the help of helicopters, an official statement said on Wednesday. Ravdesh Nandchahal, one of the stranded person, died due to illness. Authorities said while 10 people were rescued from Khela, 30 were evacuated from Budi. They were taken to an Army helipad in Dharchula on Sunday with the help of helicopters after the NDRF, local administration, and the police launched rescue operations on a war footing on the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.
With eye on 2025 Bihar election, Nitish sets July deadline for land survey
- Keeping next year’s Assembly election in mind, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has initiated a comprehensive land survey, aiming to digitise land records of 45,000 villages in the run-up to the poll, due in late 2025.
- Mr. Kumar has set a July deadline for the Revenue and Land Reforms Department to complete the exercise, the first of its kind in over 100 years. The State government has appointed nearly 10,000 officials as Special Survey Assistant Settlement Officers to carry out the task.
Fast-track courts: Justice on the clock
Fast-track courts in India were established to address the phenomenal judicial backlog (Chart 1) and ensure the timely delivery of justice. These courts were designed to deal with heinous crimes, including sexual offences and crimes against women and children. However, the effectiveness of fast-track courts has been plagued by several factors, such as resource limitations, inefficient investigations, and insufficient staff at the judiciary. The demand for these courts occasionally resurfaces when incidents like the tragic rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College happen, though the inherent limitations of the judicial system remain largely overlooked.
Indus waters: India to freeze talks with Pak.
- “Pakistan’s first response [following India’s call] was to discuss issues at the level of commissioners. But India denied this on the grounds that the commissioners are meant to execute the treaty and so this can be done only by governments. If the governmental negotiations were to begin to renegotiate the treaty, India could consider reviving the commission as a goodwill measure,” the official told The Hindu.
- On August 30 this year, India sent a letter to Pakistan, the fourth since 2023, asking to renegotiate the treaty. “India’s notification highlights fundamental and unforeseen changes in circumstances that require a reassessment of obligations under various Articles of the Treaty.
