Day of the Year
International Gin and Tonic Day
- The cocktail idea began during the reign of the British East India Company in India during the 1700’s. Malaria had been roaming around in India and became a problem. To treat malaria, George Cleghorn, a Scottish doctor, discovered that quinine, a flavor component of tonic water, could be used to treat malaria. However, not many liked the taste.
- So, British officers in India in the early 1800’s began adding water, sugar, lime, and gin to the tonic water, and thus a gin and tonic was born.

Where is the CM’s maternal affection, ask junior medics
- Seven doctors continue to remain on hunger strike at Kolkata’s Esplanade, with three of them continuing their fast for the 13th consecutive day on Friday in protest of the State’s non-fulfilment of the junior doctors’ ten-point demands.
- Six junior doctors of West Bengal started a ‘fast unto death’ on October 5 evening to dial up pressure on the government to fulfil their ten-point demands. Those include justice for the doctor who was raped and killed at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) on August 9, removal of the State health secretary, and increased security and improved patient services across State-run hospitals.
Inflation could rise 0.2% thanks to the MSP hikes for crops: economists
- India’s retail inflation, which rebounded to a 9-month high of 5.5% in September, could stay buoyant this month, too, amid hardening vegetable prices, and Centre’s recent hike in minimum support price (MSP) for crops ahead of the Rabi sowing season could add a tad more momentum to food inflation, economists reckon.
- “The delayed exit of monsoon rains in October remains a worry. Vegetable prices in the first 10 days of October have risen by 10-20%, and may lead to a similarly elevated print in October,” HSBC economists Aayushi Chaudhary and Pranjul Bhandari said in a report. They expect food prices will begin to fall from November, with cooling temperatures and healthier reservoir levels.
New Zealand keeps its nerve, moves into the final
- “We just wanted to keep it exciting for everyone, so we thought we’d just make it as nerve-wracking as possible.” New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine had said after the group stage win over Pakistan that helped the White Ferns reach the semifinal of the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup.
- On a muggy Friday evening here, Devine and her side faced some anxious moments before sealing a spot in the summit clash with an eight-run win over the West Indies. Devine opted to bat on a testing surface, the largely breezeless night making conditions trickier.
- Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer’s slow boil in the beginning meant plenty of deliveries were gobbled up. The two couldn’t read the pitch well; Bates, in particular, struggled as she attempted to manufacture shots in order to generate runs.
