World Humanitarian Day

  • World Humanitarian Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate the death of Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his fellow humanitarians in a bombing of the Baghdad headquarters of the UN. Sergio had worked at great length attempted to pull together the Draft for the official designation of World Humanitarian Day.
  • Sergio was born in Brazel, and worked tirelessly over three decades to help those victims of armed conflict by easing their pain and making sure the world did not forget them. Awareness was a vital part of his campaign, trying to ensure that those in First World Countries and places of peace remembered that there was more to war than the deaths of combatants and conflicts between governments.

SC takes suo motu cognisance of rape and murder of doctor

  • The Supreme Court on Sunday took suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
  • A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud is scheduled to hear the case, instituted on the court’s own motion, on Tuesday.
  • The matter will be called for hearing on the top of the board of cases listed for the day before the Bench.
  • The court’s suo motu intervention follows an August 13 order of the Calcutta High Court transferring the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation from the Kolkata Police.
  • The police had arrested a civil police volunteer in the case

Malaysian PM arriving today; trade, people-to-people links on agenda

  • Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will land in Delhi on Monday on a three-day visit, where he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will sign a number of agreements and chart out a “multi-sectoral cooperation agenda” to enhance trade, strategic ties, and people-to-people links, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
  • However, officials side-stepped the issue of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who is wanted by Indian investigative agencies on alleged charges of hate speech and money laundering, and whether India’s demand that he be sent back would be raised during Mr. Ibrahim’s visit.

Indian Coast Guard Director-General passes away at 59

  • Director-General of Indian Coast Guard Rakesh Pal passed away in Chennai on Sunday. He was 59.
  • The Coast Guard chief, who was in Chennai to take part in an official function scheduled to be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, died after a cardiac arrest.
  • Mr. Pal reportedly collapsed at the Chennai airport while receiving Mr. Singh and was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital around 3.30 p.m.

CCPA imposes fine on IAS coaching centre for misleading ad

  • The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of ₹3 lakh on Sriram’s IAS, a coaching institute, for publishing a misleading advertisement.
  • The institute, in its advertisement, had made claims of “200 plus selections in UPSC Civil Service Exam 2022” and “We are India’s No.1 Prestigious UPSC/IAS Coaching Institute”.
  • Nidhi Khare, Chief Commissioner of CCPA, said in a statement that an advertisement should contain truthful and honest representation of facts by disclosing important information in such a manner that they were clear, prominent, and extremely hard to miss for consumers.

Army fields tactical ‘assault canine’ Zac at bilateral exercise in Sri Lanka

  • The Armies of India and Sri Lanka have deployed canines — “K9s” in military parlance — in the bilateral exercise Mitra Shakti under way in the island nation. The Indian Army has deployed Zac, a Belgian Malinois, while Sri Lanka has fielded two canines.
  • The 10th edition of Exercise Mitra Shakti is being held from August 12-25 at the Army Training School, Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka.
  • “Two-and-half-year-old Zac is trained in specialised tactical operations such as cordon-and-search, search-and-destroy, fighting in built-up areas, jungle search, and area-sanitisation among others,” an Army official said.
