National Dictionary Day is held in honor of Noah Webster, the man who is considered to have fathered the American Dictionary. 1758 was an auspicious year for the English language, and the first English Lexicographer, or one whose craft is writing, editing, and compiling English Dictionaries. The good man was born in Hartford Connecticut to a family of some means, and his parents had the distinction of being both priest, farmer, Captain of the local militia, and the one who founded the local book society, something like a local library.

Baba Siddique murder case: Mumbai Police arrests fourth suspect from Uttar Pradesh

  • Mumbai Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of a fourth suspect in the murder of Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra Minister Baba Siddique.
  • The accused, identified as Harishkumar Balakram, 23, hails from Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The police said that the accused, who worked as a scrap dealer in Pune, played a “key role” in the conspiracy to assassinate Siddique.
  • Balakram was produced before a court here, which remanded him in police custody till October 21.

Probe hints at sabotage angle in Tamil Nadu train accident

  • A multi-departmental probe into the circumstances that led to the accident of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express at Kavarapettai in Southern Railway’s Chennai Division on Friday night, has found nuts and bolts “missing” from a crucial point on the railway line, suggesting a possible sabotage angle.
  • According to railway sources, the probe pertains to the rear-end collision of the Bagmati Express, which passed the green signal set for the main line at 90 kmph speed but ran into the loop line and hit an empty goods train. The accident resulted in the derailment of about 13 coaches and injuries to some passengers. A parcel-cum-power car went up in flames in the impact of the collision.

Half of UAPA investigations pending for over three years

  • Three recent developments have put the spotlight back on prolonged detentions, stalled investigations, and inordinate delays on bail matters under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967.
  • On October 12, former Delhi University Professor G.N. Saibaba died just months after getting acquitted in a UAPA case, following a decade of incarceration. Last week, the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University student, Umar Khalid, who was arrested under the UAPA four years ago, was once again postponed, as the Bench could not assemble with the judges on leave. Last month, the Supreme Court granted bail to a UAPA accused, who was in prison for more than four years, citing the delay in trial.

Canada alleges extortion, violent acts and homicide by New Delhi

  • Prior to the expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada, the Canadian authorities had confronted these officials with information about their alleged role in violent acts in Canada, including extortion and homicide, with the aim of disrupting ongoing violence against Canadian citizens, according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
  • The relations between India and Canada have been unravelling since Mr. Trudeau told the Canadian parliament in September 2023 that Indian agents were behind the slaying of a Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023.

Bomb threat to Air India flight from Madurai keeps Singapore on edge

  • Singapore scrambled two F-15 fighter jets after an Air India Express flight from Madurai to Singapore received a bomb threat.
