  • Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called an urgent meeting in New Delhi with top leaders of the party in Maharashtra on Monday.
  • Those invited include Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Nana Patole, former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Varsha Gaikwad, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar, and Congress Legislature Party leader Balasaheb Thorat.
  • With Maharashtra going to the polls soon, the meeting assumes significance as the Congress’s allies in the State have started demanding more seats and the Chief Minister’s post.

‘Delhi Police’s Special Cell to assist in Baba Siddique murder case investigation’

  • A team from the Special Cell of the Delhi Police will be going to Mumbai to assist in the investigations into the murder of Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar) leader Baba Siddique, police sources said on Sunday.
  • Baba Siddique (66), a former Maharashtra Minister, was waylaid by three men at Kher Nagar in Mumbai’s Bandra area just outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique’s office and shot on Saturday night.
  • “A team of four to five members from the Special Cell will go to Mumbai to investigate and assist the Mumbai Police. The team will look into the gangster angle,” the source said.

A spatial look at the Haryana Assembly poll results

  • The Haryana Assembly election results were among the closest in recent history in terms of vote share. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 39.94% of the vote share and won 48 seats in the 90-member Assembly. The Congress was just marginally behind in vote share (39.09%), but won only 37 seats. While the BJP outperformed the Congress in terms of vote share in urban and semi-urban areas, the Congress outshone the BJP in the State’s semi-rural and rural areas (Table 1).
  • The BJP translated its superior vote share compared to the Congress in urban areas (48.8% versus 27.7%) and semi-urban areas (46% versus 33.6%) into a substantial lead in seats (18 versus 5 overall).
