Children’s Day
- Celebrated across the country of India, Children’s Day was established to bring attention to and raise awareness for the welfare, rights and education of children throughout the country.
- The first Children’s Day was celebrated on November 5, 1948, and it was originally called Flower Day. The idea was to raise money to help with the United Nations Appeal for Children by selling flower tokens. The day was not celebrated annually at first, until 1954 when it was reestablished to again be a way to raise funds and awareness of the need for underprivileged children to be taken care of.

Delhi breathes its worst quality air of the season; smog blanket leads to disruptions at airport
- The city residents on Wednesday woke up to a thick blanket of smog and the season’s first ‘severe’ category air. With a drop in the wind speed, the national capital had by the evening topped the pollution charts — IQAir (a Swiss air quality technology company) placed it at the top of the world’s ‘most polluted’ major cities list while the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) ranked Delhi as the city with the worst quality air in the country.
- The Capital’s air quality index (AQI) is likely to remain in the ‘severe’ category on Thursday and improve slightly to the ‘very poor’ category on Friday. The wind speed is expected to pick up over the next few days.
- The ‘severe’ category air affects healthy people and “seriously impacts” those with existing diseases, the CPCB stated.

Modi lays foundation stone of AIIMS in Darbhanga, praises Nitish’s ‘sushashan’
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for “transforming Bihar with good governance” while pulling the State out of the era of “jungle raj” under the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
- “Nitishji has established a model of sushashan (good governance). No praise is too high for him,” Mr. Modi said while laying the foundation stone of a new All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Bihar’s Darbhanga.
- AIIMS Darbhanga, the second such medical facility in the State after Patna, will be built at an estimated cost of ₹1,264 crore on 187 acres.
- Addressing a gathering at the event in Darbhanga, Mr. Modi highlighted the development work undertaken by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Mr. Kumar.

Defence Space Agency conducts tabletop exercise
The tri-service Defence Space Agency has conducted its maiden tabletop Exercise ‘Antariksha Abhyas 2024’ aimed at bolstering the strategic readiness of the Indian armed forces in the domain of space warfare. The three-day exercise concluded on Wednesday. “Key components of the exercise included focused discussions on emerging space technologies, space situational awareness and India’s space programmes. The discussions highlighted the importance of monitoring and protecting critical assets and maintaining situational awareness in the increasingly contested space environment,” a Defence Ministry statement said.
New guidelines ask coaching centres not to make tall claims
- The Union Consumer Affairs Ministry has issued guidelines prohibiting coaching institutes from publishing misleading advertisements that make false claims on courses offered, faculty qualifications, fees and refunds.
- Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare told presspersons here on Wednesday that she had written to the Personnel Affairs Ministry against officers endorsing coaching centres after being selected to the civil services.
- Ms. Khare said the Ministry had issued notices to 45 coaching centres and had imposed penalties of ₹54.6 lakh on 18 of them for misleading advertisements. The Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisement in Coaching Sector, 2024 aimed to safeguard students and the public from deceptive marketing practices.
