Thousands of UPPSC aspirants stage protest over exam format, police use batons amid clashes
- Thousands of Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) aspirants staged a protest outside the headquarters of the commission in Prayagraj on Monday against its decision to conduct the Review Officer and Assistant Review Officer (RO-ARO) examination and the Provincial Civil Service (PCS) preliminary examination on different dates and in multiple shifts.
- The protesters, who were demanding that the exams be conducted in a single shift on the same day, clashed with the police after they were prevented from holding a scheduled sit-in at Gate no. 2 and 3 of the commission. The police resorted to baton charge to disperse the agitators, who gathered at a nearby intersection.

- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a dig at the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Congress, saying that ‘family-oriented parties’ are not only corrupt but also the biggest hurdle on the path to progress for the youth.
- Addressing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Jharkhand through videoconferencing as part of ‘Mera booth sabse mazboot’ programme, Mr. Modi accused the JMM and the Congress of only thinking about power and money and not caring about the common man.

Germany opens doors to skilled Indians amid global visa cuts
- While countries such as Australia, Canada, and the U.S. are limiting or planning to limit visas for immigrant workers, Germany is planning to increase them. This is good news for Indians, who already make up the largest group of foreign residents in Germany, both as students and workers.
- Australia recently decided to tighten regulations on temporary work visas to ensure that locals are not overlooked for employment opportunities. It is also planning to cap the number of incoming students, particularly to ease pressure on housing. Last month, Canada announced that it would reduce study permits and tighten work permits, with the issue of temporary residents becoming a highly contentious topic in the country’s political landscape.
Trial reforms, promoting mediation among new Chief Justice’s priorities
- Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who took oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday, said the core principles of the judiciary was to provide equal treatment, fair opportunity at justice to all and unbiased adjudication to all, regardless of status, wealth or power.
- Chief Justice Khanna, in an official statement released by the Supreme Court, said judges had a “constitutional duty to ensure easy access to justice to all citizens of our great nation”.
- “Judiciary is an integral, yet distinct and independent part of the governance system. The Constitution trusts upon us the role of constitutional guardian, protector of fundamental rights, and responsibility to fulfil the important task of being service provider of justice,” Chief Justice Khanna said.
Haryana slots eight past Mizoram, books a berth against Maharashtra in the quarterfinals
- Two-time champion and last year’s finalist Haryana stamped its authority with a 8-0 victory over Mizoram in a Pool B contest of the Hockey India-14th Senior National men’s championship at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Monday, thereby cementing its place in the last eight. Mizoram did put up a fight in the first two quarters, keeping Haryana largely at bay Upping the ante.
- From the third quarter, Haryana upped the ante. Current India junior World Cupper Rohit, 20 years old, turned out to be the star for Haryana scoring four goals. Tuesday is a rest day and the quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday.
