  • Libraries Remember Day began as a heartfelt response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, in the United States.
  • This day was born from the need to honor those lost and to highlight the enduring spirit of community, knowledge, and unity that libraries represent. It’s a day when libraries conduct their usual business and engage in acts of education.

Demolition drive halted in Jangpura; AAP, BJP leaders visit spot, promise support

Five days after residents of the Madrasi Camp slum cluster in south-east Delhi’s Jangpura received eviction notices from the Public Works Department (PWD), leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP met the residents and promised them support. The two parties also blamed each other for the eviction notices.

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court, while hearing a plea filed by the affected residents, asked the authorities to ensure that no coercive action is taken in the slum cluster in the Old Barapullah Bridge area, which is proposed to be cleared for the construction of a new flyover.

Explaining the close contests in swing States

  • An earlier Data Point focussed on the importance of swing States in deciding the outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential polls. Here, we explain why these States are battlegrounds by looking at the background variables of voters, such as demography, religion, geographical type, and college education.
  • Urban voters largely favour the Democrats, while rural voters largely favour the Republicans. Voters who identify themselves as religiously unaffiliated tend to prefer the Democrats, while Protestants and evangelical voters prefer the Republicans. Voters of the Black/African American community distinctively favour the Democrats. College-educated white voters are largely Democratic voters, while non-college educated white voters are overwhelmingly Republican.

  • The high unemployment rate in the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Haryana, reflected even in Union government surveys, has been a major weapon in the hands of the Opposition to attack the State government, even more so as the State goes to the polls in a few weeks from now.
  • But the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation for the January-March quarter in FY24, shows that the unemployment rate among those above 15 years of age as per current weekly status in urban areas has more than halved to 4.1% from 8.8% since the corresponding quarter in the year before, dropping below the national average of 6.7%.
