Day of the Year

National Swap Ideas Day

  • While the exact details are a bit sketchy, the origins of National Swap Ideas Day can likely be traced back to the creator of this day, Robert Birch of Pun Corp. In fact, this was not Mr. Birch’s only unusual idea as he is also thought to have invented several other strange celebration events including Lumpy Rug DayTrivia Day and the bizarrely named Nothing Day.
  • The idea behind National Swap Ideas Day is that everybody gets together to do just what the day says: exchange ideas.

GoM to decide on tax on health, life covers soon

  • To soothe the growing clamour for a reduction in the 18% tax levy on the premium paid for health and life insurance policies, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council on Monday set the stage for a possible rethink by mandating a stiff 50-day deadline for a new Group of Ministers (GoM) to review the tax rate.
  • The council’s chair, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, said the matter was discussed extensively with State Ministers and many questions arose, including on whether the tax rate should be reduced or the levy scrapped altogether, who should be exempted if at all, and how group insurance policies might be treated.

  • Mr. Shah had held meetings with State BJP leaders apart from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of the Shiv Sena and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar of the NCP. The allies are likely to hold another round of talks in Delhi next week.
