BJP keeps Haryana, NC-led alliance bags J&K

  • The BJP won a clear mandate in Haryana as did the National Conference-led alliance in Jammu & Kashmir, as the Assembly election results were announced on Tuesday.
  • The results posted on the Election Commission website show the BJP won 48 seats in Haryana, two above the majority mark in the 90-member Assembly. The Congress won 37 seats.
  • In J&K, the National Conference-led alliance won 49 seats, of which the NC alone got 42. The Congress won only six of the 32 seats it contested; of the six, only one was in Jammu.

‘All demands of Samsung workers, except recognition of union, have been met’

  • Tamil Nadu Minister for Industries T.R.B. Rajaa on Tuesday requested protesting Samsung employees at the plant in Sriperumbudur to return to work, promising them that their CITU-backed union would be recognised after the court delivers its verdict on the matter.
  • “Rivals could take advantage of the strike and divert attention from the real issues. The government and the Chief Minister stand by you. Return to work in the interests of jobs for the youth and employment opportunities in the State,” he said, in an appeal to the workers.

IAF chief says global strife points to need for strong Air Force

  • The global security environment is in a state of constant flux and the ongoing conflicts demonstrate the inescapable requirement to have a strong and capable Air Force, said Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Amar Preet Singh here on Tuesday. He added hence, there is a need for the IAF to be prepared to meet any contingency that challenges our national interests.

Upper stage of PSLV C-37 returns to earth, says ISRO

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said that the upper stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C-37 (PSLV C-37 mission) re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere on Sunday.
  • The PSLV-C37 mission was launched on February 15, 2017, with Cartosat-2D as the main payload along with another 103 satellites as co-passengers, namely INS-1A, INS- 1B, Al-Farabi 1, BGUSAT, DIDO-2, Nayif 1, PEASS, 88 Flock-3p satellites, and 8 Lemur-2 satellites. The space agency created history as it was the first mission to launch 104 satellites with a single vehicle. After injecting the satellites and passivation, the upper stage (PS4) was left at an orbit of approximately 470×494 km.

Russia claims to have captured two more villages in eastern Ukraine

Russian forces have captured two more villages in eastern Ukraine, the Defence Ministry said on Tuesday, as Moscow’s troops continue their steady advance in the region and towards Pokrovsk. Russian units “liberated” the villages of Zoryane and Zolota Nyva in the Donetsk region, the ministry said in a statement.
