Health Ministry approves new treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant TB

  • The Union Health Ministry on Friday approved the introduction of a new treatment regimen for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in India.
  • The BPaLM regimen consisting of four drugs — Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid, and Moxifloxacin — has proven to be a safe, more effective and quicker treatment option than the previous MDR-TB treatment procedure, the Ministry said.
  • It added that the country was working towards the elimination of TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target for eliminating the disease under the sustainable development goals.

After SC rap, Delhi govt.’s advt. expenditure comes down by 86%, reveals RTI

  • The advertisement expenditure of the Delhi government slumped to ₹26.2 crore in 2023-24 from ₹186.2 crore a year earlier, revealed a response to an RTI application filed by Kanhaiya Kumar, a Bihar-based activist.
  • The expenditure fell after the Supreme Court criticised the Delhi government last year for not sparing funds for the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project despite allocating a much greater sum for its advertisement budget, a Delhi government official said.

Probe ordered after Class 3 student of U.P. private school suspended over non-veg food

  • The District Inspector of Schools in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha on Friday formed a three-member committee to look into allegations that the principal of a private school suspended a Class 3 student because he allegedly brought non-vegetarian food in his tiffin box.
  • “The family of the child complained that he was beaten by the school principal and his name was struck off the school register. We have ordered an inquiry and will take action based on the report,” V.P. Singh, the Inspector of Schools, said.
  • The matter came to light after a purported video of the incident went viral on Thursday in which a heated argument could be heard between the student’s mother and the school principal.

Vinesh, Hooda in Congress first list for Haryana election

  • The Congress on Friday released its first list of 32 candidates for the coming Assembly election in Haryana, fielding Olympic wrestler Vinesh Phogat from the Julana constituency, besides former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi.
  • Party State president Udai Bhan, who lost the Assembly election in 2019, was declared as the party candidate from Hodal. Reposing faith in all its MLAs, the party said it would give ticket to all the 28 MLAs, besides four others.

‘Vegetarian thali’s cost slips 8%’

  • A sharp 51% drop in tomato prices aided in an 8% decline in average vegetarian meal costs through August but onion and potato prices surged more than 50% and the actual price paid by consumers for a vegetarian plate remained the second highest over the past year at ₹31.2, just 4% below July levels, Crisil’s food plate cost tracker shows.

    Economists expect retail inflation to stay below the Reserve Bank of India’s 4% inflation target for the second month in a row on base effects. Retail inflation had dipped to a five-year low of 3.5% in July, with food inflation at a 13-month low of 5.4%. In August 2023, retail prices had surged 6.8% with food inflation exceeding 9.9%.
