HC orders autopsy at AIIMS for Bengal child rape victim

  • The Calcutta High Court on Sunday expressed concern that charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have not been included in the investigation of the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl at Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal.
  • Justice Tirthankar Ghosh of the High Court directed the police to immediately add the relevant Sections of the Act to the case and transfer the records to the special POCSO court in Baruipur. The court also ordered that the accused be produced before the special court.

Two years after U.P. madrasa survey, a legacy in limbo, teachers struggling to survive

  • Ashraf Ali or Sikandar Baba, as his friends call him, is a teacher at Sultanul Uloom madrasa in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. At 41, he is anxious about his job and family’s future: “I spent 18 years teaching. Over the past few years, it has given me no financial benefit.” Ali is now taking up more work as an electrician, something he did as a side gig, but fears it may become his sole job soon. He has not received the Central government honorarium for about five years now.
  • Ever since the U.P. government conducted its first survey of madrasas in 2022, the community that runs these Islamic educational institutions has felt under threat. In 2023, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe alleged foreign funding sources of madrasas.

Air Force plans to procure 12 early warning aircraft

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF), which is short of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft, a critical force multiplier, is looking at the procurement of 12 aircraft under two different programmes.
  • One of them is a follow-on order of six AEW&C systems mounted on Embraer aircraft, akin to the three Netra systems in service. The other order pertains to six AEW&C systems under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that would be mounted on Airbus A-321 aircraft.

As a huge 15-lakh crowd watches, IAF planes push the envelope over Chennai’s Marina

  • Over 15 lakh people from various parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts thronged the Marina beach and its neighbourhood on Sunday to witness a spectacular air show conducted as part of the 92nd Indian Air Force Day celebrations.
  • Fighter jets, helicopters and other aircraft put up a scintillating aerial display, enthralling the audience. The aircraft that participated in various formations included Tejas jets, Rafales, Sukhoi 30 MKIs, Jaguars, Mirage 2000s, MiG-29s, Hindustan Turbo Trainer-40s, Advanced Light Helicopter Mk-Is, Hawk MKs, Chetaks, Dakotas and Harvards.
