47 killed, over 200 injured in Russian strike on Ukraine military institute

  • At least 47 people were killed and 206 wounded when Russia struck a military institute in the central town of Poltava with two missiles on Tuesday, Ukraine’s first lady said, the war’s deadliest single attack this year.
  • Photographs posted on social media showed several bodies lying around covered in dust and debris, with the badly damaged side of a large building behind them. It was not immediately clear who the victims were. Ukrainian military bloggers suggested some might be cadets or recently mobilised men undergoing training.
  • “The Russians will definitely be held accountable for this strike,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the Telegram app.

World Bank hikes India’s economic growth projection to 7% for FY 2024-25

  • The World Bank has forecast a growth of 7% for the Indian economy for the current fiscal year, upping its earlier estimate of 6.6%.
  • In its report, ‘India Development Update: India’s Trade Opportunities in a Changing Global Context’, released on Tuesday, the World Bank said India’s growth continued to be strong despite a challenging global environment.
  • The World Bank growth projection is in line with those of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). Both institutions have raised their forecast to 7% for the financial year ending March 2025.

Kolkata doctors gift a ‘spine’ to the Police Commissioner, demand urgent resignation

  • A delegation of junior doctors, protesting against the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, met Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on Tuesday and handed over a letter demanding his resignation. They also gifted him a replica of a human spine.
  • Hundreds of doctors, on a night-long protest near the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar, have been demanding the resignation of Mr. Goyal, alleging police inaction in the case. After a 22-hour impasse, the police removed guard rails and barricades, and allowed the delegation of 22 doctors to meet the Commissioner.
  • While protesters took out demonstrations from nearby Phears Lane towards Lalbazar, the delegation representing the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front met Mr. Goyal in his office and held discussions for an hour.

Funds worth ₹100 crore to boost Jaipur’s UNESCO heritage status

  • The heritage conservation and development of the Walled City of Jaipur, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, will be taken up with a budgetary expenditure of ₹100 crore. The city’s infrastructure will be strengthened with an emphasis on protecting its architectural legacy and vibrant culture.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari, who holds the tourism portfolio, visited various places in the Walled City here on Tuesday and gave instructions for launching the conservation works. Ms. Kumari said the 400-year-old Man Sagar Lake would also be redeveloped with boating facilities.

Centre gives nod to defence proposals worth ₹1.44 lakh cr

  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN), the preliminary step of the long procurement process, for 10 capital acquisition proposals amounting to ₹1,44,716 crore.
  • These include procurement of seven stealth frigates under Project-17B, future-ready combat vehicles (FRCV) for the Army as a replacement for the main battle tanks, air defence fire control radars (FCR), Dornier-228 aircraft, next-generation fast patrol and offshore patrol vessels.
  • Of the total cost of AoNs, 99% is from indigenous sources under Buy (Indian) and Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) categories of the defence acquisition procedure, the Ministry said.
