Shah chairs meet on Delhi’s security days after Atishi termed it ‘gangster capital’
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a meeting on Friday to review the law and order situation in the national capital.
- Union Home Secretary, Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Delhi Police Commissioner, and several other senior officers were present at the meeting. Mr. Shah reiterated the Centre’s “zero tolerance” policy towards crime and said that protecting women, children, and senior citizens must be the police’s priority.
- The Union Home Minister’s review meeting comes two days after Chief Minister Atishi held him responsible for the “deteriorating” law and order in the city.

SC asks CAQM to file data on paddy burnt area in Punjab and Haryana
- The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) to submit by Monday data regarding the ‘burnt area’ of paddy fields in Punjab and Haryana.
- The court’s directions came on the basis of an article published in The Hindu dated November 22, which reported that while the CAQM was aware of farmers in the two States burning paddy after satellites passed over the area to avoid detection, it informed the apex court time and again that over the past couple of years, there has been a “significant reduction” in stubble burning incidents.

SC proposes to set up expert panel to vet nod for tree felling in Delhi
- The Supreme Court on Friday proposed to set up a committee of experts and said it would direct that the permission granted for felling of trees in Delhi would not be implemented without the panel’s nod.
- Referring to the depleting tree cover in the national capital, the apex court observed the committee of experts would look into the permission granted by the tree authority and the tree officers appointed under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994.

Friday prayers held at Sambhal mosque amid heavy security
- Areas around the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal remained tense as thousands congregated for Friday prayers at the 16th-century shrine amid tight security.
- “The Friday prayers were held peacefully. We ensured heavy police deployment in the town,” Anuj Kumar Chaudhary, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, told The Hindu.
- The Shahi Jama Masjid was surveyed on Tuesday on a local court’s orders after a petition claimed that the masjid was built on the ruins of a temple demolished by Muslim rulers.
Nine persons booked for injuring tiger in Assam
Nine persons were booked in central Assam’s Nagaon district for throwing stones at a tiger and potentially blinding the animal that strayed out of a jungle. According to Forest Department officials, the police searched the houses of the people for throwing stones at the tiger. They were identified from videos of the incident. Wildlife officials rescued the tiger, bleeding from several wounds, near a railway bridge on Wednesday. “People in the area surrounded the tiger and threw stones at it, causing injuries,” one of the rescuers said, adding that the tiger was taken to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation near the Kaziranga National Park about 60 km east of Jakhalabandha. “The tiger is recovering but we fear she may lose vision in one eye,” Sonali Ghosh, director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, said.
