Inflation under 4%, but vegetable prices up again
- India’s retail inflation stayed under the Reserve Bank of India’s median target of 4% for the second successive month in August, even as it inched up marginally to 3.65% from an upwardly revised 3.6% in July. August’s inflation pace is the second-slowest in five years.
- The base effect from last year, when retail prices rose 6.8% in August, helped keep inflation growth in check yet again, but food inflation quickened from July’s 13-month low of 5.4% to 5.7%, and crossed the 6% mark in rural India. Overall, rural inflation stayed elevated compared with that faced by urban consumers, rising marginally from 4.1% in July to 4.16%, while urban inflation stood at 3.14% in August.

Basement deaths: HC asks CBI to tell reason behind waterlogging
- The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file a status report explaining the reason behind the severe waterlogging in Old Rajinder Nagar on July 27 when three Civil Services aspirants drowned in a flooded basement of a coaching centre.
- “What was the reason on that day? Delhi has witnessed heavy downpours. Why so much waterlogging on that day? Was it the rain or something else?” asked Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma. The court told the agency that it was probing a “very important case” and asked it if other buildings near the coaching centre were also flooded.

- Sheikh Abdul Rashid, aka Engineer Rashid, MP and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief, on Thursday said “the Kashmir issue and not elections is his party’s top agenda”, as he addressed his first public rally in north Kashmir’s Delina after his release from Tihar Jail a day ago.
- Kissing the ground after his arrival at the Srinagar airport, Mr. Rashid, who has been allowed to campaign for 22 days, headed for his stronghold of north Kashmir and addressed his supporters at Baramulla’s Delina area. Setting the tone for the election campaign for his party, Mr. Rashid said, “I am not an enemy of India nor an agent of Pakistan. I am an agent of my conscience. What Prime Minister Narendra Modi did on August 5, 2019 was undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

DGCA to conduct safety audit of all flying schools in country
Nearly a month after a two-seater plane of a Jamshedpur-based flying school crashed into a dam, killing an instructor and a trainee pilot, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a special safety audit of all 33 flying schools in India. “This audit aims to thoroughly assess the safety standards, operational procedures, and systemic deficiencies within flying training organisations to ensure the highest levels of safety and compliance,” the DGCA said in a press statement. The DGCA aims to cover 11 flying schools in September. The last such special audit was conducted in 2022.
